Short Tuning Explanation (Questions)

November 19th, 2016

Questions via Fuck Combustion (Baron23)

I also very much like that you can establish a set point on TC feedback or a calculated value for dab surface and that this is operator selectable. Are there any user tweakable parameters in your dab surface calculation? Can you explain this a bit more? I assume its not just a simple offset value (like -10 F) that can be user set. What are the user input for dab surface temp calculations...what would I, as an operator, need to tell the unit so it can reasonably accurately estimate dab surface temp?

Again, thanks so much for your replies. You have really piqued my interest.

Tuning

It's not a simple offset by any means. Things change greatly every couple hundred degrees regarding heat loss, etc. We've been primarily testing the thermal properties of Titanium & Ceramic the last few days (not to mention the efficiency of different coil types. Flat, 16mm, etc).

Our goal with nail temp. calculations is to have a tuning model for Titanium, Ceramic, Quartz, SiC, Hybrids (ex. Ti w/ Quartz Dish) & Sapphire based on a pool of different data collected from various nails made from each material.

As a user, all you'll need to do to take advantage of this is pick your nail material (which you can change at any time). Initial Set-up will ask for this information, but you'll even be able to do things like set Presets per nail type as well.

Say you have a Quartz Nail and a Titanium one. Quartz you like at 500, Ti at 600. With the push of a button you'll be able to change the temperature and tuning parameters of the Hex-Nail to help you quickly swap between nails.

We want this tuning combined with our noise reduction to be accurate enough to show the flaws in a user's chain, rather than require them to worry about tuning the nail itself.

Perfection has to be built from the bottom up. If your nail isn't as accurate as possible you've already shot yourself in the foot, ya know?

Mid-October Update (Old Info, See Updates)

November 19th, 2016

Update via Fuck Combustion

MID-OCTOBER UPDATE

Our team has been pretty heads down since we made the jump to Portland, but we're finally ready to start give those of you chomping at the bit a some exciting info.

So...what's been going on since we launched our pre-order site a month or so ago?

Well for one, we have upgraded our CNC capabilities in a big way. This has allowed us to finalize our production case design (v3)! We have a lot more control than before allowing us to create an incredibly strong, durable enclosure. We ended up going through around 5 different designs (and 3 major revisions) before landing where we did, but all that work has definitely paid off.

Our finishing process has also been set in stone (or wood, as it were). A lot of experimentation has gone into this one, but all of us here at Hex-Nail have a deep appreciate good wood. Heh. Our final process includes over 10 rounds of sanding, and 3 rounds of oil application, and 3 rounds of waxing. This whole process is done entirely by hand. Every enclosure is unique and true to the original characteristics of each wood we've decided to use.

There is no stain. There is no paint. Just a strong application of elbow grease and pride in what we do.

Without further adieu...Here are a few shots of what we've been working with...

1) Close-up of our V1 (original) Prototype African Padauk Enclosure. The finish was good, but further refinement has allowed us to bring out more natural chantoyance and a much more even grain finish.

2) Pictured here are a few of the raw woods (no oil or wax has been applied) along with a mix of our enclosure refinements. The top 2 are our V3 enclosure (Zebra & Cherry). The bottom 2 are our V2 design in Purpleheart & Maple.

3) Raw shots of our V3 'hidden' bottom for each enclosure design. The Hex will be on the interior of the box (Serial Number, Manufacturing Date & Info will be on the visible back).

4) On the left is a finished V2.5 Enclosure in Mahogany. The right is our V3 in Redheart. The V2.5 was a little smaller, but had a seam at the base. The V3 added refined construction and an even further refined finishing process has been started on the V3.

5) Close-up shots of the enclosures shown above (4). Grain differences between woods become more and more apparent the closer you look, but the thing to note here is that the V2.5 is 100% 'finished'. The V3 hasn't even started the waxing and buffing process yet. It adds significant time to the construction of each unit overall, but we just couldn't let it go. The end result seen with a little extra manual labor was just too noticeable to deny.

----

We should have a few finalized prototypes to start showing off soon, and we'll definitely have plenty of sexy new wood shots over the next couple of weeks as we get an enclosure for each offering finished.

Stay tuned, everyone. It's about to get fun really, really soon. Remember, pre-orders are open and the more orders we have by launch means we can include even more fun goodies in everyone's shipments. Giving back to our loyal customers is a big priority for us.

Questions & Early November Updates

November 17th, 2016

Questions via Fuck Combustion (Baron23)

Very nice! I have been rather outspoken in the past about what I consider to be excessively gold plated expensive enail controllers for basically a simple thermocouple feedback loop temp controller vice something like a Auber or High5.

HOWEVER, there are a few things I really like about this proposed unit: 1) trying to accommodate medical patients and not just "doods doing dabs" ; specifically your emphasis on temperature stability, emphasis USA made, quality construction, and customer service.

I would like to know a little bit more about your temp stability. Nothing about your algorithm which I assume is proprietary but:

  1. What is your stability goal at steady state?
  2. What is your under/over shoot goals when hit with a dab?
  3. Can you explain please the display we saw in the videos, in particular the graph in the upper left (I'm assuming one line shows set point and the other actual TC temp....maybe a smoothed down and integrated view of the temp graph to the right?

Also, I believe I read in the thread that you use 5-pin XLR. Can you please confirm the pinouts, are you "d-nail" type compatible with pins 1 & 2 = AC power, 3 & 4 TC +/-, 5 = ground?

We started this company (and building of this device) as patients, for patients and we never want to lose site of the potential for steps forward in the medicinal space. Finding Cannabis when I needed it the most in my life (living day to day using a cane or walker, and rarely leaving the house due to physical pain) changed it completely. Being able to help patients better manage their intake (especially as potency and purity in concentrates improve) is always at the forefront of our work.

But ain't nothin' wrong with dudes doin' dabs, either. Haha. Being part of the Recreational Cannabis Community as well as the Medicinal Cannabis Community has opened a lot of great doors for me. New friendships, business ventures, and exposure to things like art and music the community often seen as 'just stoners' puts into the world is invaluable to what we do as well.

You got us at Hex-Nail pretty pegged on the rest.

  • Stability & Customizability are the foundation the HN-01 is founded on.
  • The dedication to supporting USA suppliers, manufacturers, etc. comes from our personal experiences struggling to support ourselves (or growing up in a family with similar issues) in America. Supporting our community and helping it grow is at the heart of Hex-Nail as a company. Being able to work with people face-to-face and easily inspect our materials before accepting them is huge. Being able fix problems immediately is always our preference and we need quick, easy access to quality material to do that.
  • Dedication to quality construction comes from our backgrounds as craftsmen ourselves. We appreciate and see the quality that can be had over a machined finish/assembly when a little elbow grease, a human eye and love are used instead. Everything post-milling is done by hand, and we aim to keep it that way.
  • And the dedication to customer service comes from years of experience. Issues we've run into or had to fix in our own lives (or careers). We don't like to wait, we don't like to get tied up in red tape, we don't like never seeing a response from our inquiry (or only ever getting one from a computer).

We will always do our absolute best to make sure our customers have as little to deal with as possible. We also highly value our customer's input. We try to listen, instead of letting it all pile up in the mailbox (so to speak).

-----

And now for something completely different...your questions! :)

1) Our goal is to maintain a steady nail temperature (which is set by the user) within the margin of error for a K type thermocouple (3.6 F) regardless of fluctuations in the temperature of the coil itself by quickly and selectively altering power sent to the coil using our predictive algorithms.

2) Overshoot and undershoot goals are +/- 1% absolute with a recovery time of less than 10 seconds back to the set temp of either the coil or nail (with essentially no settling time)

We're already seeing numbers close to this at this point in development.

3) With the original UI in the videos (just to break it down a little) we were showing 3 things on the graph (but it's really hard to tell): Set Temp (not very visible), Current Temp (the visible red line), and changes in power (the most active, green line).

Our new UI (which we will be uploading videos of later today) reflects this goal in a much more legible way. It provides real-time graphs of power sent to the coil, coil temperature, and nail temperature (calculated via our proprietary algorithms and models) simultaneously. Users can choose to track to calculated nail temperature, or to the coil itself.

Here's a preview of the re-vamped UI:
(there's more to be done, but we've had good response to this newer design both in our own use and the eyes of a few folks we've shown it to)

Hex-Nail HN-01 UI

And to explain this a little more I'll just go over what you see here.

Top Left:
+ Profile Name

Set by user in the initial set-up (profile pictures will also be available)

+ Most Recent Dab
Placeholder info for now, though we do have tracking working it's not implemented in the UI yet

+ Drop Down Menu
This will be the source for your settings which will include things like Presets for Temps., extras like Cleaning Mode or Glob Mode, Coil/Nail Temp. Tracking Select, Mode settings, User Select, Security, etc.

Bottom Left:
+ Presets

Seen here are temperature presets (630, 710, 840) along with Glob Mode [10(%)+15(S)] and Cleaning Mode (Set to 1100 degrees for our stress tests, at the moment).

+ 'Glob Mode'
Increase power by a set percentage for a set period of time (when selected) the next time a dab is detected. This can be set for the folks that drop half gram slabs on the daily, or someone who just needs a little more along with their coffee in the morning by the user.

+ 'Cleaning Mode'
Fairly self explanatory, but it will increase your nails temperature to a (user set) point at which it will be easiest to clean/burn off any leftover material on the nail itself. This will vary depending on the material of the nail itself. Lots of folks don't want to go blasting Sapphire with 1100 degrees. Heh.

These are totally customizable to accommodate user preference.

Top Right:
+ Coil Temperature

Currently dimmed since we're tracking to the nail temp., but is updated in real-time.

Bottom Right:
+ (Calculated) Nail Temperature

Currently illuminated since we've selected to track to it. It stays at your set temperature and does not change when selected (same goes for Coil Temp. when tracked to)

Center:
+ Graph & Lines

- Red: Current Coil Temperature
- Green: Power Fluctuation (Which is represented as a percentage 'needed to maintain temp.' by the line)
- Dotted Line: Set Temp
- Orange: (Calculated) Nail Temperature (which tends to run mostly parallel with coil temp. when at steady state)

+ Current (Tracked) Temperature
Which updates in real-time along with the (dimmed) Coil Temp.

-----

We are wired in standard 'D-Nail Compatible' fashion. We wanted to ensure to most universal fit for all of our customers.

I'm pretty proud of our latest finished results and I'm excited to post new shots of some completed enclosures soon (along with the videos, if proper lighting permits).

Free Hour of Code Workshops December 5 through 11 at Every Apple Store

November 17th, 2016
CUPERTINO, California — November 17, 2016 — Apple® today opened registration for Hour of Code workshops at all 487 Apple retail stores worldwide, from December 5 through 11 in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. Among the most popular events at the Apple Store®, Hour of Code workshops teach the basics of computer science with Code.org’s programming tutorials. Apple and Code.org share the goal of giving every student the opportunity to learn computer science.

“Hour of Code embodies our vision for Apple stores as a place for the community to gather, learn and be entertained,” said Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail. “We’re proud to introduce the Swift Playgrounds app into the workshops and honored to again work side-by-side with Code.org on this incredibly important initiative. Hour of Code is one of the absolute highlights of the year for both our teams and the families that visit our stores.”

“Since we started Hour of Code in 2013, Apple has each year upped its participation and found ways to introduce more kids to computer science,” said Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org. “The global footprint Apple offers through its stores and talented staff has reached tens of thousands of kids, and with the introduction of Hour of Code in Swift Playgrounds we can introduce coding to even more.”

Swift Playgrounds
This year, Hour of Code programs at many Apple locations will include an introduction to Swift Playgrounds™, the free new app for iPad® that brings coding to life. The interactive interface of Swift Playgrounds encourages beginners to explore working with Swift™, the easy-to-learn programming language from Apple, used by professional developers to create world-class apps.

“Coding is just like any language, the earlier you’re exposed the more successful you’ll be,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Whether at an Apple Store, in a classroom, or at home with an iPad, Swift Playgrounds brings real coding concepts to life and empowers the next generation with the skills they need to express their creativity.”

A new Hour of Code challenge in Swift Playgrounds makes it easy for anyone to set up their own one-hour coding event, and for those continuing to build their coding skills on iPad, Swift Playgrounds adds a new Learn to Code 3 set of lessons and a companion Teacher Guide.

Hour of Code for Educators
In addition to in-store workshops, Apple has developed a series of tools to extend Hour of Code into schools and community centers, including a free facilitator guide offering lesson ideas, group activities and more. Apple Teacher, a free, professional self-paced learning program supporting and celebrating teachers in the US, has added resources, badging and recognition for learning and teaching coding with Swift Playgrounds on iPad.

Continuing Apple’s $100 million commitment and ongoing partnership to provide 114 underserved schools with technology, services and support, Apple will provide materials and resources to assist ConnectED schools around the country to host their own Hour of Code workshops.

“Designed by Apple in California” Chronicles 20 Years of Apple Design

November 15th, 2016
CUPERTINO, California — November 15, 2016 — Apple® today announced the release of a new hardbound book chronicling 20 years of Apple’s design, expressed through 450 photographs of past and current Apple products. "Designed by Apple in California," which covers products from 1998’s iMac® to 2015’s Apple Pencil®, also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over two decades of innovation.

The book is dedicated to the memory of Steve Jobs.

“The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.”

The products in this book are the result of a profoundly close collaboration between many different groups. Shot by photographer Andrew Zuckerman in a deliberately spare style, the book’s 450 images illustrate Apple’s design process as well as its finished products.

In the book’s foreword, Ive explains:

While this is a design book, it is not about the design team, the creative process, or product development. It is an objective representation of our work that, ironically, describes who we are. It describes how we work, our values, our preoccupations, and our goals. We have always hoped to be defined by what we do rather than by what we say.

We strive, with varying degrees of success, to define objects that appear effortless. Objects that appear so simple, coherent, and inevitable that there could be no rational alternative.

"Designed by Apple in California" is available in two sizes and printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges, using eight color separations and low-ghost ink. This linen-bound, hardcover volume was developed over an eight-year period. It is published by Apple.

Pricing & Availability
"Designed by Apple in California" will be available beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, November 16, in small (10.20” x 12.75”) at $199 (US) and large (13” x 16.25”) at $299 (US) exclusively from Apple.com in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the UK and the US, and select Apple Stores.*

The book is on display at the Apple Stores where it is sold.

*"Designed by Apple in California" is available at the following Apple retail locations: Apple Regent Street and Apple Covent Garden in London; Apple Opera in Paris; Apple Kurfürstendamm in Berlin; Apple ifc mall and Apple Canton Road in Hong Kong; Apple Ginza in Tokyo; and Apple Sydney.

In the United States: Apple SoHo, Apple Fifth Avenue, Apple Upper East Side, Apple Williamsburg and Apple World Trade Center in New York; Apple The Grove in Los Angeles and Apple Third Street in Santa Monica; Apple North Michigan Avenue in Chicago; Apple Lincoln Road in Miami; Apple Northpark in Dallas; Apple Union Square in San Francisco; Apple Palo Alto and Apple Infinite Loop in Cupertino.

Apple Unveils New TV App for Apple TV, iPhone & iPad

October 27th, 2016
CUPERTINO, California ― October 27, 2016 ― Apple® today introduced the new TV app, offering a unified experience for discovering and accessing TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV®, iPhone® and iPad®. The TV app provides one place to access TV shows and movies, as well as a place to discover new content to watch. Apple also introduced a new Siri® feature for Apple TV that lets viewers tune in directly to live news and sporting events across their apps. Watching TV shows and movies across Apple devices has never been easier.

“Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place.”

Key Features Within the TV App Include:
  • Watch Now: Watch Now is where viewers will see their collection of available shows and movies from iTunes® and apps. From Watch Now, viewers can then go to Up Next or Recommended to choose what to watch.
  • Up Next: Users can enjoy the shows and movies they are currently watching, including recent iTunes rentals and purchases — all presented in the order they are most likely to watch first. For example, when viewers finish an episode, the next one will automatically appear at the start of the Up Next queue, as will any new episodes as they become available. At any time, users can simply ask Siri to continue watching a show and immediately pick up where they left off.
  • Recommended: Viewers can explore a great selection of curated and trending shows and movies, including collections handpicked by Apple’s curators, and dedicated categories and genres such as kids, sci-fi and comedy.
  • Library: Viewers can access their entire collection of iTunes movies and TV shows that they have rented or purchased on iTunes.
  • Store: If users are looking for something new, they can check out the Store to discover great new content across video services that they have not yet downloaded or are not yet subscribed to, along with the latest releases on iTunes.

The TV app will be available for Apple TV, iPhone and iPad and always stays in sync so that when users begin watching on one device they can easily continue where they left off on their Apple devices.

Live Tune-In With Siri
Siri continues to gain powerful new capabilities, including making it really easy to tune right to live news and sporting events on Apple TV. Siri is now aware of live sporting events across apps so users can simply say things like, “Watch the Stanford game” or “Which games are on right now?” Siri knows additional details of the games, can provide live scores and can take viewers directly to the live stream within the app that’s carrying it. Viewers can also tune directly to live video by just saying the name of the app, for example “Watch CBS News” without having to navigate to the live stream from within the app.

Single Sign-On for Pay-TV Apps
In addition to the new TV app, customers in the US will have a simplified way of enjoying their pay-TV video apps by using single sign-on. Starting in December, subscribers to DIRECTV, DISH Network and more will just sign in once on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to enjoy immediate access to apps that are part of their pay-TV subscription.

Since its introduction just a year ago, the latest Apple TV has revolutionized the experience in the living room with 8,000 apps, including 2,000 games and 1,600 video apps, across categories such as sports, news, fitness, education, kids, lifestyle and more.

Availability
The TV app and single sign-on will be available in December as free software updates for Apple TV (4th generation), iPhone and iPad customers in the US. Live tune-in with Siri is available today. For more information, please visit: apple.com/tv. Features are subject to change and only apply to participating apps. Some features may not be available in all regions or all languages.

Apple Releases Significant Update to Final Cut Pro X

CUPERTINO, California ― October 27, 2016 ― Apple® today introduced a significant update to its professional video editing app, Final Cut Pro® X, featuring incredible new editing features for the Magnetic Timeline, support for the revolutionary Touch Bar™ on the new MacBook Pro® and a redesigned interface with full support for wide color workflows. The Touch Bar replaces the keyboard’s traditional function row with a brilliant, Retina®-quality Multi-Touch™ display that dynamically adapts to Final Cut Pro X by putting intuitive, context-sensitive controls right at the user’s fingertips. Apple also released updates to Motion and Compressor.

“This is our biggest update to Final Cut Pro X since we completely redesigned it five years ago,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Apps Product Marketing. “The new version features a sleek interface and adds powerful new editing features that go far beyond what’s possible with traditional, track-based video editing apps; and integration with the revolutionary Touch Bar gives professional video editors a whole new way to interact with Final Cut Pro X.”

With the new Magnetic Timeline in Final Cut Pro X, users can understand their film at a glance with customizable arrangement and color coding of audio clips based on type or “role” — such as dialogue, music and effects. It’s simple to create and assign roles, and give each one a unique color. And in a first for pro video software, users can simply drag to instantly rearrange the vertical layout of their timeline or highlight specific audio roles while editing.

Integration with the Touch Bar on the new MacBook Pro boosts creativity and productivity by dynamically adapting to each task and presenting intuitive controls exactly when and where users need them. While using Final Cut Pro X the Touch Bar lets users instantly switch between editing tools, adjust audio levels and tap into useful commands for trimming and playback. It will even display a color-coded, interactive overview of the entire timeline so users can navigate their project with the touch of a finger.

A redesigned interface streamlines the layout of Final Cut Pro X to optimize screen space for MacBook Pro users, while a darker, flat look puts the focus on the content. Customizable workspaces lets users adjust window arrangements for different tasks such as organizing, editing and color grading — even across multiple monitors. Full support for wide color workflows allows users to import, edit and deliver video in standard Rec. 601 and Rec. 709 color spaces, or in wide gamut Rec. 2020 color space.

Additional Features in Final Cut Pro 10.3:
  • Flow transition creates invisibly smooth jump cuts;
  • Remove Attributes allows users to easily delete or reuse select effects across multiple clips;
  • Timecode overlay effect and generator allow users to edit with a large view of source timecode;
  • Support for ProRes MXF, Panasonic V-Log and export of AVC-Intra;
  • Direct video output via Thunderbolt 3 enables high-quality video monitoring on an external display with a single cable.

Motion 5.3 features a sleek new interface with support for wide color workflows and 3D text enhancements that improve the performance and realism of 3D titles. The new Align To behavior lets users easily connect separate objects to create advanced animations, and Touch Bar support provides easy access to a wide range of interactive tools on the new MacBook Pro.

Compressor 4.3 has a new dark look to match Final Cut Pro X and Motion. Enhancements to iTunes Store® Package creation let users easily browse, verify and compress packages so they can be delivered to the iTunes Store faster and fully compliant. Wide color support ensures end-to-end color fidelity when delivering files in standard and wide color spaces, and Touch Bar support simplifies common tasks like setting up batches and adding markers on the new MacBook Pro.

Pricing and Availability
Final Cut Pro 10.3 is available as a free update today for existing users, and for $299.99 for new users on the Mac® App Store®. Motion 5.3 and Compressor 4.3 are also available as a free update today for existing users, and for $49.99 each for new users on the Mac App Store. macOS Sierra Now Available as a Free Update

September 20th, 2016
CUPERTINO — September 20, 2016 — Apple® today announced that macOS™ Sierra, the latest major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, is now available as a free update. macOS Sierra brings Siri® to the Mac® with intelligent and helpful features users know and love from iPhone® and iPad®, along with all-new capabilities designed specifically for use on the desktop. Features like Universal Clipboard, iCloud® Desktop and Documents, Auto Unlock and Apple Pay® on the web help your Mac work even better with other Apple devices. And Photos gets an update with a new Memories feature that automatically creates curated collections of your favorite photos and videos.

Siri on the Mac can help send messages and email, find documents, look up information, search a user’s photo library, adjust system preferences and more. Users can also drag and drop Siri results into documents or pin them into their Today view for later reference. Universal Clipboard allows users to copy content from an app on one Apple device and paste it into another app on a different Apple device. With iCloud Desktop and Documents users can now access the files on their Desktop from iPhone and iPad. And Auto Unlock lets users automatically log into their Mac when they are wearing an authenticated Apple Watch®.

Apple Pay on the web makes the online shopping experience in Safari® more convenient and secure than ever. Shoppers can now click the Apple Pay button at checkout on nearly 300,000 participating websites, including 1-800-Flowers, Gilt, Instacart, Lululemon, Warby Parker and more, and then complete their purchase with Touch ID® on iPhone 6 or later or with Apple Watch. Users’ credit or debit card information is not shared with online merchants and strong encryption protects all communication between a user’s device and Apple Pay servers.

Photos introduces Memories, which highlights favorite and forgotten moments in users’ photo libraries by automatically creating curated collections of occasions like birthday parties or family vacations. Photos uses advanced computer vision to identify faces, objects and scenes in your images, so photos can be searched by who and what is in them. An all-new Brilliance editing tool brightens dark areas and pulls in highlights to make photos look richer and more vibrant.

Other great new features in macOS Sierra:
  • Messages makes conversations more interesting, allowing users to preview web links and play video clips from right within the app; respond to messages with a Tapback like a heart, thumbs up and more directly onto a message bubble; and send bigger emoji for more message impact.
  • Tabs are now available across Mac apps that support multiple windows, including Maps, Mail, Pages®, Numbers®, Keynote®, TextEdit, and even third-party apps.
  • Picture in Picture floats video from Safari or iTunes® in a window over the desktop. The window can be resized, dragged and pinned to any corner of the screen so users can watch video while they work.
  • Optimized Storage frees up space when a Mac starts getting full by storing infrequently used items in the cloud and helping users remove apps and files they no longer need.

Swift Playgrounds Now Available on the App Store

September 13th, 2016
CUPERTINO — September 13, 2016 — Swift Playgrounds™, an innovative new iPad® app from Apple® that makes learning to code easy and fun for everyone, is now available on the App Store®. With Swift Playgrounds, real coding concepts are brought to life with an interactive interface that allows students and beginners to explore working with Swift™, the easy-to-learn programming language from Apple used by professional developers to create world-class apps.

The Swift Playgrounds app is approachable enough for students with no previous programming experience to begin exploring key coding concepts, but also powerful enough for skilled programmers to experiment and express their creativity using Swift.

“Everyone should have the opportunity to learn coding, and we are excited to bring Swift Playgrounds to the next generation of programmers looking for a fun and easy way to explore key coding concepts using real code,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “More than 100 schools around the world have already committed to adding Swift Playgrounds to their fall curriculum, and we can’t wait to see what students create with it.”

Swift Playgrounds includes Apple-developed programming lessons that guide students through a series of challenges and puzzles to guide three on-screen characters through an immersive graphical world as they learn core coding concepts, like issuing commands, creating functions, performing loops and using conditional code and variables. Apple will also regularly release new standalone challenges so users can continue learning new skills.

Swift Playgrounds also features built-in templates that users can modify and build on to create their own programs with graphics and touch interactions. They can then share their creations with friends using Mail or Messages or even by posting to the Web. And since Swift Playgrounds uses real Swift code, projects can be exported directly to Xcode® and ultimately be turned into full-fledged iOS and Mac® apps.

Availability
Swift Playgrounds is available today on the App Store for free. Swift Playgrounds is compatible with all iPad Air® and iPad Pro™ models and iPad mini™ 2 and later running iOS 10. For more information including videos, images and demos, visit: www.apple.com/swift/playgrounds.

Apple Pay Coming to Japan with iPhone 7

September 7th, 2016
SAN FRANCISCO ― September 7, 2016 ― Apple® today announced that iPhone® 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch® Series 2 will bring customers in Japan the ability to use Apple Pay®, an easy, fast and secure way to pay for everything in their daily routines, beginning in October. Users can commute and pay for everyday items with Suica from JR East, and make convenient and private credit and prepaid card purchases in stores, apps and on the web with a single touch. Apple is also introducing support for transit in Japan with Maps in iOS 10, so commuters can easily find ride details, including fare breakdowns that automatically show Suica pricing right on their device, making their commute more seamless and simpler than ever.

Apple Pay is accepted anywhere Suica is available, so users can make quick everyday purchases and buy or reload a Suica card or commuter pass, all with their iPhone. Japan’s major financial brands will also support Apple Pay, so shoppers can make purchases in many of the country's largest stores, at neighborhood shops and restaurants, and from their favorite online merchants.

“We are incredibly excited to bring iPhone 7 to customers in Japan so they can experience the magic of Apple Pay,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Apple Pay will transform your daily routine, from making your commute easier and more convenient than ever with Suica right on your iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2, to using your favorite cards to make secure and private purchases with a single touch.”

“As the world’s largest transit operator, JR East is committed to innovating so we can provide our customers across Japan the best service possible,” said Tetsuro Tomita, president and CEO of East Japan Railway. “For iPhone 7, we redesigned an entirely new experience from the ground up so our customers can enjoy the ease and security of using Apple Pay while commuting, in our app and in stores with Suica.”

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 sold in Japan will support FeliCa Type-F NFC contactless technology, which is used every day for more than 160 million transactions across Japan.

When Maps launches support for transit in Japan with iOS 10 in October, Apple Pay users can map out and pay for their entire commute, including major train, subway, ferry and national bus lines, on their iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2, based on updated fare and schedule information. If you have a Suica card added to Apple Pay and are planning a route that exceeds its balance, an alert will show it’s time to reload, and you can do so instantly, right on your device. Commuters can also follow carefully curated navigation instructions so it’s easy to get around Japan’s extensive underground tunnel networks.

Apple Pay will support many of the most popular Japanese credit and prepaid cards issued by AEON, Credit Saison, JCB, Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos, Orient Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, Toyota Finance, UC Cards and View Card, and carriers KDDI, NTT Docomo and Softbank, representing more than three-quarters of all credit card spending in Japan, with major global and domestic networks like American Express, Mastercard, JCB, iD and QUICPay. Users will continue to receive all of the rewards and benefits offered by their cards.

Beginning in October, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 users will be able to make purchases in stores anywhere Suica, iD or QUICPay is accepted, encompassing nearly two-thirds of all transactions at Japan’s largest merchants. In addition to Apple Stores in Japan, leading retailers that will accept Apple Pay include convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Circle K, Family Mart, Lawson, Ministop and Sunkus, supermarkets such as AEON, APITA and PIAGO, gas stations including ENEOS and Esso Mobil General, retailers like BicCamera, Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Uniqlo, and favorite local brands such as JapanTaxi and Sukiya.

Online shopping in apps and on websites accepting Apple Pay is as simple as the touch of a finger with Touch ID®, so there’s no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information. Your card number is kept private and not shared with the merchant. Online brands that will accept Apple Pay in Japan include BASE, Demae-Can, giftee, Jalan.net, JapanTaxi, minne and Toho Cinema.

When paying for goods and services on the go within apps or Safari®, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6 and later, iPad Pro™, iPad Air® 2, and iPad mini™ 3 and later. You can also use Apple Pay in Safari on any Mac® introduced in or after 2012 running macOS™ Sierra, and confirm the payment with iPhone 6 or later or Apple Watch.

Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. If your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch is ever lost, you can use Find My iPhone to put your device in Lost Mode to suspend Apple Pay, or you can wipe your device clean completely. You can also stop the ability to make payments with Apple Pay on iCloud.com. If you lose your device, your Suica balance is recoverable.

When you use a credit or prepaid card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device.

Apple Reinvents the Wireless Headphone with AirPods

September 7th, 2016
SAN FRANCISCO — September 7, 2016 — Apple® today introduced AirPods™, innovative new wireless headphones that use advanced technology to reinvent how we listen to music, make phone calls, enjoy TV shows and movies, play games and interact with Siri®, providing a wireless audio experience not possible before. AirPods eliminate the hassles of wireless headphones, by just flipping open the lid of its innovative charging case and with one tap, they are instantly set up and ready to work with your iPhone® and Apple Watch®. Advanced sensors know when you are listening and automatically play and pause your music. Using Siri, AirPods allow you to access your favorite personal assistant with just a double tap. This revolutionary experience is enabled by the new ultra-low power Apple W1 chip, which enables AirPods to deliver high-quality audio and industry-leading battery life in a completely wireless design. AirPods will be available starting in late October.

“AirPods are the first headphones to deliver a breakthrough wireless audio experience, and with the new Apple W1 chip they deliver innovative features including high quality sound, great battery life and automatic setup,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “AirPods are simple and magical to use, with no switches or buttons, automatically connecting to all your Apple devices simply and seamlessly, and letting you access Siri with just a double tap. We can’t wait for users to try them with iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2.”

With AirPods, setting up and using wireless headphones has never been easier. Just open the charging case near your iPhone and with a simple tap, AirPods are immediately set up with all the devices signed into your iCloud® account, including your iPad® and Mac®. AirPods are connected and ready to go when you are, just put them in your ears when you want to listen. AirPods can intelligently and seamlessly switch from a call on your iPhone to listening to music on your Apple Watch.

The all new Apple W1 chip enables the groundbreaking innovations in AirPods, with dual optical sensors and accelerometers in each AirPod that work with the W1 chip to detect when AirPods are in your ear, so they only play when you are ready to listen. Simply remove them to automatically pause the music, or just remove one to have a conversation and automatically resume when you put it back. Access Siri with a double tap to your AirPods to select and control your music, change the volume, check your battery life or perform any other Siri task. An additional accelerometer in each AirPod detects when you’re speaking, enabling a pair of beam-forming microphones to focus on the sound of your voice, filtering out external noise to make your voice sound clearer than ever before.

The ultra-low power Apple W1 chip operates at one-third of the power of traditional wireless chips, enabling AirPods to deliver up to 5 hours of listening time on one charge. The custom-designed charging case holds additional charges, for an industry-leading more than 24 hours of total listening time,* ensuring AirPods are charged and ready to go whenever you are.

Pricing & Availability
  • The new Apple-designed wireless AirPods including charging case will be available for $159 (US) from Apple.com and Apple Stores beginning in late October.
  • AirPods require Apple devices running iOS 10, watchOS® 3 or macOS™ Sierra.

*Compared to completely wireless stereo headphones.

The A10 Fusion’s CPU now has four cores, seamlessly integrating two high-performance cores that run up to two times faster than iPhone 6, and two high-efficiency cores that are capable of running at just one-fifth the power of the high-performance cores. Graphics performance is also more powerful, running up to three times faster than iPhone 6 at as little as half the power, enabling a new level of gaming and professional apps.

Both phones include support for up to 25 LTE bands, for the best worldwide roaming in the industry, and LTE Advanced for three times faster data rates than iPhone 6 at up to 450 Mbps.1 For customers in Japan, iPhone will now support the leading FeliCa contactless technology, bringing the ability to use credit and prepaid cards, including on iD and QuicPay domestic networks, and Suica, Japan’s dominant transit card issued by JR East, the world’s largest transit operator.

The new iPhone comes with EarPods® with Lightning® connector to deliver incredible sound, as well as a 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter that allows customers to use old headphones and accessories.

New AirPods™, Apple’s innovative new wireless headphones, weave simplicity and technology together to reinvent the wireless experience making headphones easy to use. Apple Introduces Apple Watch Series 2, The Ultimate Device For A Healthy Life

September 7th, 2016
SAN FRANCISCO — September 7, 2016 — Today, Apple® introduced Apple Watch® Series 2, the next generation of the world’s most popular smartwatch. Apple Watch Series 2 is packed with incredible fitness and health capabilities including a water resistance 50 meter rating for swimming,*  and built-in GPS so users can now run without an iPhone®. Apple Watch Series 2 also features a dramatically brighter display and a powerful dual-core processor. Combined with the performance enhancements of watchOS® 3, Apple Watch Series 2 makes it even easier to access third-party apps, receive and respond to notifications and conveniently use Apple Pay®. Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in more than 25 countries beginning Friday, September 16.

“We’re thrilled with the response to Apple Watch and how it’s changed people’s lives. We are committed to fitness and health and think our customers will love the new capabilities of Apple Watch Series 2,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “With a powerful new dual-core processor, water resistance 50 meters and built-in GPS, Apple Watch Series 2 is packed with features to help our customers live a healthy life.”

Fitness & Health
Apple Watch Series 2 is rated water resistant 50 meters for swimming, surfing or just playing in the pool. For swimmers, Apple developed all-new algorithms after hundreds of hours of research for two new workout options, pool and open water. Apple Watch Series 2 can count laps, track average lap pace and auto-detect stroke type to accurately measure active calorie burn.

With built-in GPS, Apple Watch Series 2 records precise distance, pace and speed for outdoor workouts such as walking, running or cycling, without needing to take an iPhone. Users can begin an outdoor workout immediately as Apple Watch Series 2 uses Wi-Fi, GPS and locally stored satellite data to quickly identify their location. On completion of an outdoor workout, view a route map that shows variations in speed in the Activity app on iPhone. Whether running, going for a swim or walking between meetings, the Activity app on Apple Watch Series 2 counts all daily activity towards the Stand, Move and Exercise rings.

Advanced Technology
Apple pioneered the custom designed System in Package (SiP) for Apple Watch, and continues to develop this breakthrough technology with the second generation S2 chip. With a dual-core processor, the S2 chip takes performance to a new level, making Apple Watch up to 50 percent faster. In addition, a new GPU has been added, which delivers up to two-times-greater graphics performance. Apple Watch Series 2 also features a dramatically brighter display — at 1,000 nits, it’s more than two times brighter— making this the brightest display Apple has ever shipped, so it’s even easier to see important information at a glance when outside on a sunny day.

watchOS 3
watchOS 3 features significantly improved performance that makes it even simpler to launch favorite apps instantly, either from the watch face or with the new Dock, which displays the latest information already updated in the background. New fitness and health capabilities include the breakthrough Breathe app, designed to encourage users to take a moment in their day to do deep breathing exercises for relaxation and stress reduction. The Activity app now includes the ability to share, compare and compete, keeping friends and family motivated. There is also a customized experience for wheelchair users to close their Activity rings, in addition to dedicated workouts.

Apple Watch is even more personal with new watch faces including Minnie Mouse, Activity and Numerals. Simply swipe edge-to-edge to swap out a new watch face and with the new Face Gallery in the Apple Watch app on iPhone, it’s even easier to customize watch faces and discover third-party apps.

Apple Watch Lineup
Apple Watch Series 2 is available with all the new fitness and health capabilities in lightweight aluminum or stainless steel cases, paired with a wide variety of gorgeous new band colors.

Apple Watch Series 1 is available in lightweight aluminum and combines the new powerful dual-core processor and GPU with all the incredible features of the original Apple Watch, making it up to 50 percent faster and available to even more customers, starting at just $269 (US).

Apple Watch Edition™ now comes in a beautiful ceramic, that embodies craftsmanship with a lustrous white case and all the incredible features of Apple Watch Series 2. Ceramic is one of the hardest materials in the world — more than four times harder than stainless steel — with a beautiful, white, pearl-like finish, making Apple Watch Edition extremely scratch-resistant.

Happy National Aviation Day!

August 19th, 2016

In case you didn’t know–and you probably didn’t–today is National Aviation Day.

Thank ol’ FDR for the holiday. Franklin D. Roosevelt established the first National Aviation Day on Aug. 19th, 1939.

Why Aug. 19th? That was Orville Wright’s birthday. If you don’t know who Orville Wright…well, your teacher wasn’t doing his or her job. Orville and his brother, Wilbur, made the first successful airplane flight on Dec. 17th, 1903. The brothers’ monoplane few for 2 min. and a length of 1,500 ft. Within two years, the brothers’ planes were hitting speeds of over 30 MPH and ranges of over 20 miles.

Consider that for a moment. Two minutes and 500 yards were milestones in aviation. Those are blips when compared to today’s popular drones. A Phantom 4 can easily breach 30 MPH and fly over a mile. And who knows how fast and far drones will go by decade’s end.

Looking at the Phantom 4 and Inspire 1, one can’t help but be impressed by how far aviation has come along. Pretty cool, eh?

Apple Announces Environmental Progress in China & Applauds Supplier Commitment to Clean Energy

August 17th, 2016
BEIJING — August 17, 2016 — Apple® today announced a significant commitment by major supplier Lens Technology to run its Apple operations on entirely renewable energy. This unprecedented commitment, combined with zero waste compliance from all final assembly sites, furthers Apple’s efforts to help manufacturers lower their carbon footprint and reduce waste in China, helping to advance China’s transition to a new green economy.

Lens Technology has committed to power all of its glass production for Apple with 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2018, as part of Apple’s industry-leading supply chain clean energy program announced last year. Lens is the first supplier to make a clean energy commitment for all of its Apple production, and will meet its goal through an unprecedented power purchase agreement with local wind projects.

Apple is working with suppliers to help transform the environmental landscape in China, and is proud to announce all 14 of its final assembly sites in China are now compliant with UL’s Zero Waste to Landfill validation. The UL standard certifies all of their manufacturing waste is reused, recycled, composted, or, when necessary, converted into energy. Since the program began in January 2015, the sites have diverted more than 140,000 metric tons of waste from landfills.

“We want to show the world that you can manufacture responsibly and we’re working alongside our suppliers to help them lower their environmental impact in China,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives. “We congratulate Lens for their bold step, and hope by sharing the lessons we’ve learned in our transition to renewable energy, our suppliers will continue to access clean power projects, moving China closer to its green manufacturing goals.”

“Our power purchase agreement is the first of its kind in southern China and we hope it will serve as an example for other companies looking to transition to cleaner, more economical sources of power,” said Lens CEO Zhou Qunfei. “We’re pleased to be the first supplier to commit to covering all of our Apple production with renewable energy, and proud to source from local Hunan wind farms to power our facilities in Changsha.”

Lens’ manufacturing with Apple currently includes two facilities in Changsha, Hunan province. Wind energy will cover 100 percent of the energy consumed producing Apple products at Lens facilities by 2018, avoiding nearly 450,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, equivalent to the energy use in 380,000 Chinese homes.

Through its clean energy program, Apple will partner with suppliers in China to install more than 2 gigawatts of new clean energy in the coming years, avoiding over 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution in the country between now and 2020. Foxconn committed in October to construct 400 megawatts of solar, starting in Henan province, by 2018. The manufacturer is now well on its way to constructing the first 80 megawatts of that commitment.

Earlier this year, Foxconn final assembly sites at Guanlan and Taiyuan were the first in China to receive UL’s Zero Waste to Landfill validation. With the recent addition of 12 manufacturing sites, all of Apple’s final assembly production in China is now zero waste compliant.

“We applaud innovative companies, like Apple, that are leading by actively reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing operations,” said UL president and CEO Keith Williams. “Achieving zero waste is an extensive effort that requires close coordination across all facets of a company’s operations, especially when the commitment is global.”

Apple has taken significant steps to protect the environment by transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy. Today, the company is powering 100 percent of its operations in China and the US, and more than 93 percent of its worldwide operations, with renewable energy.
